Coffee gadget causes a stir

Gadget bloggers were divided in their opinions of Gevalia’s new self-stirring coffee mug. The mug stirs gently on its own without the coffee drinker having to reach for a spoon or do anything at all, except press a button.
One blogger welcomed the mug as the perfect solution for those ‘all the spoons are dirty’ situations, while another suggested it was of use only “if you are an uncoordinated jackass that spills your beverage every time that you stir it.”

“Brugo” Mug Cools Coffee One Sip at a Time

brugo_03.jpgThe “Brugo” mug has a trick top that lets you tip in a small amount of coffee to cool, letting you leave the rest of your coffee as hot for as long as possible. It sounds like a lot of trouble, but that’s never stopped coffee nerds.

No price or availability information yet.

I first read the “Lock” setting on the lid as “Luck” and imagined a second compartment that would release a factory-selected random flavor into your mouth. Product Page

I am not a paper cup

papercup.jpgThe “I Am Not a Paper Cup…” is a double-walled porcelain mug with a silicone lid, giving you the feel of those disposable paper coffee cups without all the waste. It’s not on sale until February, but should cost about $20.

It reminds me of Graham Hill’s “We Are Happy to Serve You” mug. Product Page

Aeropress

Single Serving Coffee - http://www.thinkgeek.com/interests/giftsunder50/8e3a/

Coffee - considered by many the quintessential caffeine delivery system in the world. Those luscious little beans have been cultivated on every continent except Antarctica. However, many people don’t like coffee due to some of the bitter compounds present in the brew.

Compounds such as chlorogenic acids, trigonelline, furfuryl alcohol, and even caffeine itself lend bitter flavors to a pot of fresh coffee. Fans of the drink have been trying for centuries to find the best way to extract all the flavor and aroma from coffee, while extracting only a balanced amount of bitterness.

Aerobie, the folks that make those wonderful flying rings, created a way to brew a single cup of the most flavorful and yet least bitter coffee you’ve ever tasted. Coffee snobs around the world have enjoyed the Aeropress coffee maker, and have compared the brew it makes to brews made with $6000 Clover coffee machines!

Here’s how you do it:

  • Place a filter on the bottom of the Aeropress
  • Place the Aeropress on top of your favorite coffee mug
  • Put a measured scoop of coffee into the brewing chamber
  • Pour hot water into the brewing chamber
  • Using the included stirrer, mix the coffee and water
  • Wait twenty seconds, and place the plunger on top of the brewing chamber
  • Push down gently on the plunger
  • When the plunger reaches the bottom, pop out the puck of coffee grounds into the garbage
  • ***
  • Profit! Enjoy your perfect cup of coffee!

Volvo Safety System Makes Assumptions About Your Beverage Preferences

volvosafe02-1_270x270.jpgIf there is one thing that really grinds my gears, it’s when an inanimate object judges me and makes assumptions about my lifestyle. A new safety feature to be included in the 2008 Volvo V70, XC70 and S80 will flash a coffee mug in the middle of the tachometer when it senses your driving is impaired. Despite automatically assuming every Volvo driver loves either coffee, tea, or a hairy mug, the system senses your alertness and level of impairment in a pretty unique way.

It uses a Driver Alert Control system that watches the cars relation to the lanes. It can detect when the driver is drifting too far in the lane and will warn the driver that it’s time for a break. Additionally, the Volvo models will get some Adaptive Cruise Control as well, which is becoming more and more familiar as of late.

Fashionable mugs for good causes

Fashion designer Giorgio Armani is just one of the celebs who has created a unique coffee mug to raise money as part of the 21st Century Leaders. The 21CL label is a charity artwork project, which raises money for a variety causes. Mugs by Donna Karan, Armani, Claudia Schiffer, David Bowie and others raise money for Trade plus Aid. Save the Children and other important charities. There are also wristbands, T-shirts and other products available. The goal is to raise a minimum of $3 million over three years. Armani’s mug, shown here, is perhaps the sleekest of the bunch depicting the Mandarin character for “hope” against a celadon background. The mugs sells for £9.99 and will be followed by a line of decorative plates sometime next year.

Adorable coffemaker for one

Single cup coffeemakers aren’t a new concept, but this French press and mug set available at Rare Device is the first one I’ve ever actually wanted to own. It looks grown up and fresh, not like some “my first coffeepot” geared towards college freshman shopping for their dorm rooms.

Bring it to the office so you can drink expensive coffee without having to bring enough for the whole floor. Or, put it in your small kitchen in place of that bulky Mr. Coffee and his cords taking up your precious counter space. The set comes in red, blue, aqua, and orange (the aqua is going on my Christmas list).

Tully’s Switches Over to Compostable Coffee Cups

tullys.jpg

Tully’s Coffee is now the first major coffee retailer to use a fully renewable and compostable paper cup for its hot beverages.

With its use of International Paper’s Ecotainer Hot Cup, which is lined with a bioplastic made from corn, rather than a petrochemical one, Tully’s has also simultaneously launched an in-store collection program to divert the used cups and other compostable food waste to organic composting facilities, rather than losing them to the landfill.

The cup is the only commercially available 100 percent compostable hot cup certified by the Biodegradable Products Institute, a press release states. (No mention of whether the cups are now made of post-consumer recycled content, however; last we heard, they weren’t, which really takes the “Eco” out of the “Ecotainer.”)

In contrast, Starbucks underwhelmed us when it announced with much pomp that its cups would feature 10 percent recycled materials.

Do all these companies one better and take your own reusable commuter mug for your java fix.

Eshelman Pottery Espresso cups

eshelman_med.jpgBy Paul Eshelman and informed by Japanese/Chinese crafts, American Shaker traditions, and contemporary Architecture. Eshelman uses red stoneware clay heated to the point of vitrification so as to create a non-porous surface. At Treehugger, we like ceramics for the dent they don’t leave on the earth, but in particular, we like that these have a dynamic color despite using lead-free glaze. Microwave, oven, dishwasher safe, there’s nothing at all fussy about them. 4 for $80.

Hidden Camera Coffee Mug

(Credit: StarTech Outlet)

It may seem surprising, but it’s not often that Crave gets to write about an item with this kind of description in its product literature: “Great for use in interrogation rooms for law enforcement agencies.”

We’ll have to take StarTech Outlet’s word for it, as that’s how the site describes its “2.4GHz Coffee Mug Wireless Camera.” In fact, with a name like that, there’s really not a whole lot more that needs to be said.

The mug is outfitted with a minuscule camera and video transmitter that sends images in color but “automatically switches to B&W in low light” for those times when you’ve trained a hot lamp on your subject. Its $285 price tag may seem like a lot, but consider the satisfaction you’ll have in getting Junior to break down and admit he ate the last Krispy Kreme.
