Coffee gadget causes a stir

Gadget bloggers were divided in their opinions of Gevalia’s new self-stirring coffee mug. The mug stirs gently on its own without the coffee drinker having to reach for a spoon or do anything at all, except press a button.
One blogger welcomed the mug as the perfect solution for those ‘all the spoons are dirty’ situations, while another suggested it was of use only “if you are an uncoordinated jackass that spills your beverage every time that you stir it.”

Mobile coffee, the wave of the future?

With summer in full swing, now is the perfect time to go camping. When I was younger, it was a tradition in my family to go find a spot in the middle of nowhere, try desperately to set up a tent before it rains, and eat charred food that even squirrels wouldn’t touch. Then in the morning we would rise from our piles of nylon and sit around the campfire sipping coffee that had the consistency of tar. Now that I’ve reached the age where I’m ready to take my family into the woods against their wishes, I feel a duty to give our camping trips a bit more class. Imagine waking up to the delicious taste of a cappuccino instead of drinking a substance you could use to patch tires. My friends, I introduce the Handpresso.

Espresso in an instant

While it may seem like another needless gadget to a coffee lover, the Handpresso is an answered prayer. With its size, portability, and ease of use, you can literally get your caffeine fix anywhere you go. Going on a picnic? Have a mocha! Sitting in your cubicle? How about an americano? Car broken down on the side of the road? Why not sip on a latte? All you need is hot water and one of the E.S.E pods, or Easy Serving Espresso, which are relatively easy to find in your local grocery store. Use the pump and build up pressure, pour in hot water into the 50 milliliter reservoir, and with the push of a button you’re ready to partake in some delicious java.

The only downside to the Handpresso is the price. While the company is selling convenience and the ability to take your coffee literally anywhere, the fairly steep price of $150 may convince a few people to keep going to Starbucks. However, if you’re desperate to sit at the Grand Canyon sipping on espresso and nibbling on biscotti, this might be the ideal Christmas gift.

The Wave LED Coffee Table Provides Motion-Seeking Light Show

light_table.jpg

Here’s an interactive LED coffee table that refuses to simply table your coffee—it twinkles and sparkles, reacting to movement. The Wave uses 32 near-infrared sensors which observe the space above the table and any motion detected is mimicked with trails of light and color from 480 LEDs.

A cat, for instance, would be followed by LEDs as it walked across the table. Once sitting, only its moving parts would be responded to, such as its tail. It’s good that the table only uses 35 Watts of power when fully active, or else mesmerized guests would run your coffers absolutely dry. Each 62″ long, 31″ wide, and 18″ high table is made to order and starts at around $2,500. Check out the gallery if you’re comfortable with the idea of a table entertaining guests better than you can.

Ristretto coffee mouse brings the beans and the ugly

Thankfully for us, the world’s ugliest phone has already been faced and dealt with, and while we’ve seen quite a few unique mice in our day, this one practically roasts the compoetition for the most unsightly. The Ristretto coffee mouse is a minature critter designed for — c’mon, you got this — mousing about in your favorite beanery or java shop, and while we suppose you could view this as a symbol of your unwavering love for entirely overpriced cups of caffine and sugar, we doubt it’ll score you any solid conversations outside of awkward Amway plugs. Still, these devices appear to be at least somewhat hand-crafted, as the designer has a bevy of custom desgined models for show, and while we’ve no idea where you could spend your hard-earned dough on this thing, this looks like a private DIY project at its finest at best.

Spike Your Espresso, Literally

For those who need an extra jolt in the morning, this Saeco Etienne Louis espresso machine is happy to oblige. Constructed of steel with aluminum spikes, the sphere actually hides a compartment to heat water, combining form and function brilliantly (kill, caffeinate, repeat).

And while the espresso maker only pumps out one to two cups at a time, your third guest will be too busy crapping their pants to request that you fire up the machine for a second go, and otherwise ruining post-dessert conversation. We don’t know how much this beauty costs, but like a trip to the gun store, we don’t recommend you attempt the five-finger discount.

Two-killowatt laser heats coffee, wows onlookers

Lasers have found their way into the hearts of modders everywhere, and while this latest case doesn’t guide missiles or remove hair, it does make a mean cup of joe. All you’ll need is a sturdy mug, coffee grinds (or a tea bag, whichever you prefer), a bit of water, and a spare two-kilowatt laser to get things a steamin’. Sure, there’s most certainly a few alternatives to accomplish this same task with a lot less hassle, but there’s just no substitute to making your office a round of java with a commercial-grade laser. Now, how about we give this a go with a 67-kilowatt version?

Presenting the Coffee Machine That Reads Minds

Coffee machine company says it will lead the way for “super-automatic” coffee machines that use artificial intelligence. This new breed of learning coffee makers could be introduced in the next several years, predicts coffee machine retailer.

It sounds like something out of a sci fi novel: futuristic appliances that turn on and prepare favorite recipes based on their owner’s thoughts. But for Lafayette, Indiana based JL Hufford Coffee and Tea, such a future is not all that distant. Today, the company announced that it has begun provisional patent exploration into coffee machines that learn and react to their users.

learningmachinegoogle.jpg

James Pappas, JL Hufford Coffee and Tea’s Product Manager, believes that the technology enabling an appliance to learn and react to its user’s preferences, so-called “ubiquitous computing”, is already both available and affordable. “The software for a basic [artificial intelligence learning algorithm is currently available and quite inexpensive”, says Pappas, whose store specializes in “super-automatic” coffee machines.

Super-automatic coffee machines totally automate the coffee and espresso brewing process. A machine is filled with coffee beans and water, and the unit grinds, brews, disposes of used coffee grounds, and resets itself for the next cup. Within the past several years, so-called “One-Touch” machines have taken automated brewing a step further with their ability to brew milk-based coffee drinks, like lattes and cappuccinos, with the press of one button. In addition, the newest super-automatics, like the Jura-Capresso Impressa Z6, allow each member of the family to program his or her own drink preferences, like coffee temperature, strength, and size. “This is simply the next logical step”, claims Pappas.

What will it be like to use such a machine? “For the first several weeks, the machine learns the drinking patterns of its users. Then it adapts. Every Sunday afternoon, it’s French vanilla cappuccino time. Each weekday morning, it starts brewing a triple espresso at 7:00 am. After dinner, it does up a creamy decaf café au lait.” How does it know where you are or at exactly which moment you’ll be ready for your drink? Pappas is tight-lipped about this aspect, the crux of his invention, but he hints at GPS tracking or existing RFID technology. What is certain is that some machines, like the Jura-Capresso Impressa F9 already have ports which could be connected to a computer. Once the computer is networked, the possibilities are many.

What’s more, Pappas envisions yet another feature for your cellular phone. “You have your coffee maker on speed dial,” explains Pappas, “and you just give it a call when you are a few minutes from home, and it already knows what to brew. If you want to override preset drink preferences, you can dial in and enter an override drink code. Existing cellular technology opens up a slew of possibilities.”

Although this is all still in the theoretical phase, existing super-automatic coffee centers already curtail performance based on their user’s preferences. “We already carry machines that have personalized messages for their users, remember different user’s preferences, and can be connected to the Internet.” explains Pappas.

Such innovations are nothing new for JL Hufford Coffee and Tea, who would like a prototype of such a machine to be ready within the next several years. In 2005, the company introduced Superautomatika Blend ®, the first coffee beans that were crafted exclusively for use with super-automatic coffee centers.

About JL Hufford Coffee and Tea: founded in 1992, JL Hufford Coffee and Tea, http://www.jlhufford.com, is the Internet’s largest retailer of super-automatic espresso coffee centers, gourmet coffee, and chai tea. It also has a brick and mortar store presence in the Greater Lafayette, Indiana area.

Coffee Table PC

Just face it, Stephen Johnson has a cooler coffee table than you. While you’ve been busy finding large and colorful books full of puppies and/or Oprah Winfrey to stack on top of yours (OK, maybe that’s just us), Stephen Johnson has been building the “ultimate” Media PC inside of his mod-inspired table, and it looks pretty darn sweet. The Coffee Table PC is featured in this month’s issue of T3 magazine, and includes a TV tuner, a 160GB HDD, a special LCD for displaying the weather, and is liquid cooled to keep things nice and quiet. There’s also WiFi for streaming your media wirelessly, but the £2500 starter pricetag ($4765 US) is enough to send us scurrying back to the relative safety of our collection of kitschy books.
